Bioacoustician & Programmer
Jared Stephens is a bioacoustician and programmer with experience in various bioacoustics and animal behavior research settings, including, killer whale psychoacoustic research, analysis of effects from marine mammal deterrents around fisheries, and bottlenose dolphin vocalization measurements. Jared specializes in complex data analysis and visualization, as well as developing statistical models to determine patterns in marine ecosystems and behavioral responses within marine mammal species. He has been a bioacoustics scientist with the National Marine Mammal Foundation since 2023 and is currently supporting the Bioacoustics Analysis and Applied Research Team with the U.S. Navy. He also supports environmental data analysis projects with Integral Consulting.
Jared received his Masters of Science in Marine Mammal Science from the University of St Andrews in 2022, and his BS in Marine Science from Eckerd College in 2021. Since joining OSA, he has helped develop a variety of programs to visualize and analyze acoustic data. Jared has experience programming in R, python, and MATLAB, as well as utilizing other acoustic programs such as PAMGuard and Raven. He is also knowledgeable in QGIS.
When he’s not filtering through datasets, Jared enjoys surfing in beautiful San Diego, playing soccer and pickleball, and practicing his chess strategies.
