MBON BioSoundĀ Project

Monitoring Marine Soundscapes

The MBON BioSound Project aims to support efficient and meaningful monitoring of marine ecosystems through passive acoustic data. Our goal is to "keep a finger on the pulse" of underwater habitats by understanding how biological and anthropogenic sounds interact and change over time. By evaluating the relationship of these acoustic patterns to environmental conditions and specific habitats, we seek to develop scalable, data-driven tools to support biodiversity tracking and ecosystem management.

About the BioSound Working Group

Exploratory Study Across Ocean Habitats

In this pilot study, we analyzed a small set of passive acoustic data from eight diverse environments—including offshore, reef, and mangrove habitats in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Using the python-based tool scikit-maad, we calculated 60 acoustic indices and compared them with remotely sensed environmental variables to explore relationships between soundscapes and habitat conditions. This work provides a foundation for future scalable biodiversity monitoring using sound.
