Gabriela Alongi
Programmer & Scientist
Gabriela Alongi is a scientist and programmer with over 10 years of experience in various roles and settings, including bioacoustics analysis with multiple marine mammal research groups, blue whale photo-ID work out of Long Beach, harbor seal cognitive research at the St. Andrews Aquarium, and gray whale surveys in Santa Barbara. Her specialties are wrangling various forms of data and coaxing software to automate and streamline processes for cetacean acoustics research. She has been a bioacoustics analyst at the National Marine Mammal Foundation since 2016, developing algorithms for the passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals with the WARP (Whale Acoustics Research Project) Laboratory.
Gabriela received her MRes (Master of Research) in Marine Mammal Science from the University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland in 2014 and BS in Aquatic Biology from UC Santa Barbara in 2011. Before working with OSA and the Foundation, she was also an analyst of bioacoustics data for Bio-Waves, Inc. assessing the effects of anthropogenic activities on dolphin vocalizations and developing and testing a call classifier. Gabriela has experience programming in C++/C, R, MATLAB, VBA and (some) Python, and is familiar with a variety of software commonly used in marine mammal acoustic research, including PAMGuard, Raven, and ISHMAEL.
When she is not debugging code, Gabriela enjoys reading, co-hosting a podcast about reading (Infinite TBR), crafting, puzzling, fending off her demonic cat, and spending time with her family and friends.
