Research Services

Our services emphasize the utilization of open-access software and publicly available data resources. This allows us to easily share our knowledge and skills with others and access big ocean data.

Our Services

We apply our expertise in ocean analysis methods and training in the following ways:

  • Conduct spatial and temporal analyses of accessible physical and biological marine data
  • Leverage our technical training capabilities and connections within the educational community to act as STEM advocates and train the scientists of tomorrow
  • Extensive experience in physical oceanography and marine mammal ecology
  • Develop software methods, data products and training modules for specific goals of our clients

Examples of some of the software tools we use include:

  • Bioacoustic monitoring and analysis software including Ishmael & PAMGuard
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including ArcGIS & Q-GIS
  • R and Python programming for analysis and visualization of data, custom GUI development, etc.

Elizabeth Ferguson

CEO and Founder

Elizabeth Ferguson is a Marine Ecologist and Educator with 17 years of experience in the education and research communities of San Diego.  Through much of her career, she has specialized in marine mammal bioacoustic research, with expertise in passive acoustic monitoring and analytical software.  More recently, she has pursued studying natural and anthropogenic physical-biological impacts on marine megafauna population dynamics using analytical software such as ArcGIS, R and Python.  Liz is adept at combing her technical expertise with effective communication of complex topics through outreach and educational materials.

Prior to founding Ocean Science Analytics, Liz worked at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (NOAA Fisheries) as a passive and active acoustic technician. In this role she gained extensive field experience in the Gulf of Mexico, the Eastern Tropical Pacific, and the Pacific Northwest regions. Liz later worked for Bio-Waves Inc., as their Chief Operating Officer (COO), with additional responsibilities in data analytics and project management.

Liz is a graduate of the University of San Diego with a B.A. in Marine Science, and Point Loma Nazarene University with an M.S. in Biology. Liz also possesses a Specialist Certificate in GIS. She is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Biology Departments at Miramar College, California State University San Marcos, and the University of San Diego. She also serves as the Executive Director of Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) of San Diego, a non-profit supporting young women in their pursuit of STEM careers.

Jennifer Pettis Schallert

BioSci, LLC - OSA Partner

Jennifer Pettis Schallert is the owner of BioSci, LLC. BioSci. In that capacity, she consults in a variety of scientific services that include data sciences, field sciences and education. Jennifer first became interested in data sciences when analyzing her Masters thesis data on dolphin echolocation at Georgetown University. The power of analytical tools such as MATLAB, SAS and R enabled her to see patterns in large data sets that would be too time consuming and less reliable without being able to program custom data analysis tools. This interest developed into the core part of her career.

Over the past 12 years, Jennifer has worked in data sciences to program analyses and analytical tools in a variety of topics within both environmental sciences and clinical research. Her efforts have supported projects in local and federal government as well as private industry. Jennifer has expertise in working with clients and organizations to create custom analytical tools for their data needs.
